Fragrances and the city of Florence
Caterina de’ Medici’s Journey
The use of perfumes, spicy waters, and fragrances dates back to the most ancient civilizations, but it resurfaced during the Renaissance in the homes of Italian noblewomen and eventually reached France through marriage. We are in Florence, Tuscany, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, at the court of the Medici family, rulers of Florence and later Grand Dukes of Tuscany, where a young Caterina de’ Medici, just fourteen years old in 1533, was preparing to leave her beloved city to become the future queen of France by marrying the Duke of Orleans.
The young woman, full of interests and passions, brought with her not only her loyal courtiers and culinary habits but also her trusted perfumer, Renato Bianco, who, upon arriving in France, would captivate the French noblewomen with his essences and fragrances. They would come to call him René le Florentin, making him a star in the France of that time.
This story tells how a Florentine perfumer and a young queen gave birth to the French perfume tradition.
